my start towards more sustainable living
Hi, I’m Lauren — I’m trying something new, and choosing to share it with everyone.. so be nice. This is my honest start to sustainable living.
I’m not an environmental expert. I’m a mom of two, a registered dietitian, and someone who’s started paying more attention- to how much packaging comes into our home, what we actually use versus what we buy, and how our habits shape the way our kids see the world.
If you’re wondering how to start living sustainably, I’m glad you’re here because, me too. I’m learning, so buckle up and learn with me and from me- and my mistakes. This isn’t a blueprint for perfection, just the first few steps toward a low-waste lifestyle that actually fits your life.
Why I Decided to Live More Sustainably
Like a lot of parents, I had a moment — purging toys for the millionth time — where I thought: “This can’t be the best we can do.”
Between plastic packaging, waste, and fast food, everything, I felt overwhelmed but also motivated. I didn’t want to do it all. Okay actually yes, I did want to do it all, but I knew I didn’t have the bandwidth with two little kids at home and a business. I realized that I straight up couldn’t do it all, but I could do something.
So I started small. Less waste. More intention.

What Sustainable Living Looks Like for Me
Here’s how I’ve started:
- Swapped cling wrap for beeswax wraps
- Intentionally shopping secondhand
- Using Reusable bags (even if I forget half the time)
- Frequenting the Farmer’s market
- Making myself wait before “buying it now”
This isn’t a guide to zero-waste perfection. This is sustainable living for beginners — and especially for people doing other life shit at the same time.
3 Simple Ways to Start Living Sustainably Today
1. Choose one thing to swap.
Try reusable produce bags, beeswax wrap, or just bring your own mug.
2. Eat what you already have.
Wasting less food is one of the most powerful eco-friendly habits you can engage in.
3. Shop more mindfully.
Ask: “Do I need it?” “Can I borrow it?” “Can I buy it used?”
Why Imperfect Action Still Matters
Maybe you’ll forget your reusable bag. Maybe your toddler melts down in the bulk aisle because they can’t stick their hand directly into the container of chocolate chips… oh, that’s just us? That’s okay. Every small action matters.
Because our habits add up.
One reusable bag might not change the world — but a million people making one small change-even if it’s not the same one? That’s culture-shifting. Every time you choose to waste less, support an ethical brand, or model mindfulness for your kids, you’re contributing to something bigger than you.
Small actions matter because they:
Shift demand The more we buy local, reduce plastic, and waste less food, the more companies are forced to change how they produce and package things.
Build momentum Small habits lead to bigger lifestyle changes
Set an example for your kids, your neighbors, your community. If someone sees you with your reusable cup, you could be the person that inspires someone else to follow your lead!
Perfection isn’t the goal — participation is.
Real life sustainability is possible.
